market?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I joined the Research and Development arm of Microsoft\u2019s CTO Office to help Microsoft uncover new opportunities for emerging tech that will transform our products, services and business models. My goal is to find the untapped areas of potential and make the case to our business units on how to get into that market, whether it\u2019s via investing, acquiring, partnering, or even building products on our own. I\u2019m always looking for our next big idea and opportunity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to uncover those opportunities, I need to keep a pulse on ongoing and emerging trends across multiple industries, and then become an expert almost overnight on what we\u2019re seeing. With how fast the market is evolving, I can\u2019t use months-old data locked into a spreadsheet. I can\u2019t rely on what was written a year ago about a new technology and ignore the advancements made since then.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also need to trust the data I get. I have to pitch the business units on major changes, from creating new products to reimagining business models. If I don\u2019t have data I believe in, I can\u2019t do that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I became a CB Insights client after subscribing to the newsletter and reading public research for years. I knew the platform was valuable, but there\u2019s so much more than just good research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:8px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\"><blockquote><p>It\u2019s the only platform with real-time visibility into every emerging tech market, and it\u2019s become my starting point for every project.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building <span class=\"has-inline-color has-dark-purple-color\">Technology Focused<\/span> Solutions <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have to figure out where our business units need to go next, and often, that\u2019s not a well-defined space. I\u2019m often looking at the \u201cin-between\u201d spaces, adjacent to our existing spaces today. CB Insights helps me define and understand those spaces with data-driven research, and then quickly turn those insights around into a pitch presentation to stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re also looking at what other large enterprises are doing in these spaces, which makes a compelling data point for our business units. How can we differentiate? What are the strengths that we can use? For example, drones are an area of interest for us. We were able to learn that Walmart is already investing, and now it\u2019s easier for me to make a recommendation to executive stakeholders on whether or not we should be looking at that market and what the opportunities are. It\u2019s information we can\u2019t get without CB Insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting the <span class=\"has-inline-color has-dark-purple-color\">Big Picture<\/span> and the <span class=\"has-inline-color has-dark-purple-color\">Smallest Details<\/span> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My role is to not just understand the markets and megatrends, but also become an expert on the companies and startups in the space. Both tell the story of the momentum and market need for a product or service and help me to craft recommendations to the Corporate Development team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I start by trying to estimate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbinsights.com\/what-we-offer\/data\/\">market size<\/a> of the market I\u2019m looking at, as well as adjacent markets, to understand product-market fit. This clear, data-driven evidence helps me substantiate my Proof of Concept.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, I can take that market and start showcasing all the companies within it, by building my own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbinsights.com\/what-we-offer\/market-analytics-and-visualizations\/\">market map<\/a> within CB Insights. It\u2019s a simple, effective way to paint the full picture of a market for my pitch presentations internally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once I start diving deeper into the companies, I need to start looking at their financial and operational data, including the press mentions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:8px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\"><blockquote><p>I use the company profiles to discover who\u2019s investing in the start-ups and what\u2019s their financial situation? Who are they partnering with? All of these answers come from CB Insights.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:8px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I also use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbinsights.com\/mosaic-score\/\">Mosaic Score<\/a> as my key indicator of the company\u2019s potential, and a way to compare companies in the same space. The Mosaic Score is an objective, single source of truth to evaluate companies, based on the company\u2019s market size, financial position, strength of the management team, and the overall momentum based on news sentiment and other factors. It\u2019s immensely valuable. Financial data can only tell you so much when evaluating startups; this is why I use and sort my company shortlists by the Mosaic Score.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cbinsights.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Management_Mosaic_Focus_Wiki_update_20220629-1.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10488\" width=\"792\" height=\"465\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\"><blockquote><p>This insight gives Microsoft the confidence to determine if we should build something ourselves, partner or acquire.&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:8px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And in one such case, we decided to build it ourselves. We uncovered an opportunity via my daily interactions with CB Insights and built a product related to AI, data and privacy which is now in private preview, the stage before it is available to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Getting <span class=\"has-inline-color has-dark-purple-color\">Buy-in<\/span> from Business Units<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After I pull all this information together, my next step is to persuade our executive decision makers; I need to push the organization forward with big, bold ideas that will keep us as the market leader for years to come. I can\u2019t do that if I don\u2019t get their buy-in.
